Obituary for David A. Montgomery

David A. Montgomery
Reverend David A. Montgomery, 88, of Cartersville, passed gently into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Kindred Hospital in Rome surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Montgomery was born in Durham, NC on June 17, 1926, the son of the late Raymond Bennett Montgomery and Ida Mozell Sanders Montgomery. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Reba Panter Montgomery; six siblings; one granddaughter, Angeleta Renee Presley and his best friend, Stanley (Sonny) May.
Mr. Montgomery was a proud World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge in 1946, he attended Lee College in Sevierville, TN. During a revival in college he was called to preach and minister to the Hispanic speaking people. He met his wife, Reba Panter while in college and after their marriage moved to Rome where they began the ministry of their calling. They relocated to Atlanta in 1969 and remained there until the death of his wife in 1999. He then moved to Cartersville to join a bluegrass gospel band and made it his permanent residence. During the sixty year span of his ministry, he pastored several churches, evangelized all over the southeast, volunteered as Chaplin at the Floyd County Prison Camp, and had several nursing home ministries. He learned to speak Spanish and was the happiest when he would go for mission trips to Mexico where he started churches. In his later years he still remained faithful, teaching the Adult Bible Class on Sunday mornings, singing and playing his bass guitar. He lived a happy life serving his Lord and was an incredible role model for his children and grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and a joke for any occasion.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Reverend David Raymond Montgomery and LaRita Beard Montgomery; his daughter and son-in-law, Joy Renee and Tony Martinez all of Cartersville; his grandson, James Elvis Presley; his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Ellis Presley; his great grandchildren, Trace and Kaylin of Jefferson; his granddaughter, Tisha Danielle Hayhurst of Lilburn; and his great granddaughter, Brook Lauren Cobb of Tucker.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2014 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with The Reverend Marshall Moon and The Reverend Ray Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 3, 2014 in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Copperhill, Tennessee.
