Condolences

Condolence From: John Laughter
Condolence: I had no idea that Sonny has passed. We were in a band in Jacksonville, Fla along with Mack Doss who would later be in the Classics IV touring band for a year and is still playing in Florida. Our band was together around 1967-68 after I got out of the service. Sonny, Mack Doss and Roger (bass) and the rest of us played at Mothers Lounge and the Office Lounge on Phillips Hwy. Sonny was the absolute finest drummer that I played with in Jax. We had a good club band playing a wide variety of good dance music which kept us booked. Sonny always had a smile and a good word for everyone. I believe he also drove a GTO. I got married and moved to Tampa to finish school in 1970 and lost touch with Sonny but I know that he would think back about our good times just as I have thought about him over the years. Just glad that I had the good fortune of being on stage with him!!

Condolence: I met Sonny in 1968, soon after I got back from Vietnam...I was playing at a club not far from Sonny's home in Jacksonville Fl...I was there for two weeks and I had a six piece band with three horn players...The first week Sonny came in and watched us play but did't introduce his self....The second week he came in I walked up and asked him if he was a musican, and he said yes I play drums...My band had nehru shirts and black dress pant and Beatle boots...Sonny had a football jersey, jeans that were too short and cowboy boots...His hair looked like a lions mane....He invited me to one of his gigs and we became friends first and a few years later band mates...Through the years we formed a bond more like brothers than band mates...We both wound up in Atlanta Ga., with different bands, but eventually wound up playing music together again...Whether we worked together or not, we always stayed in touch and loved each other like brothers...I would have to write a book to tell all the great stories and adventures we had together...Sonny and I did a lot of charitable events over the years...He had a big heart for people in need, especially children...I know he will be rewarded for his many good deeds and love for his family and friends...I will miss him so much...Love you Sonny...Jimmy Amerson.
