Obituary for Charles E. "Charlie" Alvis

Mr. Charles E. "Charlie" Alvis, age 73, of Euharlee passed away in the morning of Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Redmond Regional Hospital in Rome. Charlie was born on January 18, 1942 in Texarkana, Texas.

He held only two jobs in his life. He had a very exciting and varied 8 year career in the United States Air Force, serving in Vietnam, Ethiopia, New Guinea, Guam, Illinois, California, and Georgia. He spent over 30 years working for Southern Company at Plant Hatch, Plant Mitchell, Plant Hammond, and ended his career at Plant Bowen where he became known as the Precipitator King! In his retirement years, he thoroughly enjoyed sitting on his front porch monitoring the opacity and the lights of Plant Bowen's smoke stacks. He also enjoyed volunteering at Cartersville Medical Center and being a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors, Rome Chapter. He was preceded in death by his daughter Mariann Alvis in 1966, his mother Dorothy Jean Lewallen of Marshall, TX in 1982, and his father Hubert Alvin Alvis of Texarkana, TX in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Ramona Fontaine Alvis; his brother David Alvis (Nancy) of Cabot, AR; his children, Laura Mills (Rocky) of Marietta, Cynthia Alvis of Sandy Springs, Leona Leaman (Glenn) of Buena Vista, GA, Marshall Fontaine (Sherry) of Buena Vista, GA; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Euharlee Baptist Church with The Reverend Bradley Baker officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 2:00 until the funeral hour. A committal service will be held in the New Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion County, GA on Monday with The Reverend David Chapman and The Reverend Sam Allen officiating.
