Jimmy& Diane Amerson

I met Sonny in 1968, soon after I got back from Vietnam...I was playing at a club not far from Sonny's home in Jacksonville Fl...I was there for two weeks and I had a six piece band with three horn players...The first week Sonny came in and watched us play but did't introduce his self....The second week he came in I walked up and asked him if he was a musican, and he said yes I play drums...My band had nehru shirts and black dress pant and Beatle boots...Sonny had a football jersey, jeans that were too short and cowboy boots...His hair looked like a lions mane....He invited me to one of his gigs and we became friends first and a few years later band mates...Through the years we formed a bond more like brothers than band mates...We both wound up in Atlanta Ga., with different bands, but eventually wound up playing music together again...Whether we worked together or not, we always stayed in touch and loved each other like brothers...I would have to write a book to tell all the great stories and adventures we had together...Sonny and I did a lot of charitable events over the years...He had a big heart for people in need, especially children...I know he will be rewarded for his many good deeds and love for his family and friends...I will miss him so much...Love you Sonny...Jimmy Amerson.
